No matter what type of weight lifting you are performing or what body type you are, it is proven that those who keep a strict schedule of when they workout have much better results, both physically and mentally.
Those people who workout are better at coping with stress and avoiding the health complications that follow stress. Weight lifting puts you more in touch with your body and that gives you a much greater control over you mind.

There are many different types of lifting techniques. One technique which I have personally tried is the Pyramid workout.
This consists of a series of sets starting with a low weight doing a higher amount of repititions and alternating to a heavier weight with less reps.
Say you start with 10 reps of standing curls with 20 lbs. of weight.
Next set you would move to 8 reps with, say, 25 lbs. of weight.
Then a set of 6 reps with 30 lbs. of weight.
Next would be 4 reps with 35 lbs. of weight, and so on and so forth.
The Pyramid is great for building strength.

Another type of weight lifting workout is the burn out. You use a low weight and do as many reps as possible until you are unable to do any more. You do this on every exercise you can: bench press, curls, dumbbell press, leg extension, seated rows, etc.

There are many safety precautions to take into consideration when lifting weight. If you are a beginner, make sure you have someone to spot your lift of the weight. This way you can learn better control and end up with better form. Exercises that put stress on you pelvic region require a weight belt.
If you want to prevent calouses from excessive weight lifting you should try gloves.

Here is a picture of a type of gloves available for lifting.
